The Ministry of Health wishes to update the public on the current influenza-like-illness(ILI) ,or flu-like-illness,on Efate Island, Shefa Province. According to the latest surveillance report of the Ministry of Health covering the period from 13 January to 19 January 2025, a total 504 confirmed cases of ILI have been recorded on Efate. The majority of cases have been detected in the communities of Ohlen, Mele, and Bladiniere, with more than 25 cases followed by Teouma, Manples, Tagabe, Freshwota, with no death.
The continued high case number of ILI on Efate indicates ILI or flu-like outbreak is maintained on Efate Island.
Respiratory viruses are common around the world and follow a seasonal pattern with increased during the dry cold period between May and October in Vanuatu.
Influenza Transmission and Symptoms
Influenza-like-illnesses, are spread primarily through contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person's cough, sneeze or talking. It can also be spread by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your nose, mouth, or eyes.
Common symptoms of Influenza-like-illness include high fever(>=38oC) plus Cough (usually dry), sore throat .Other symptoms can included a runny nose, headache, muscle and joint pains, and fatigue (sever tiredness).
Most people who get flu will recover in a few days to less than two weeks, but some people can develop complications (such as pneumonia) as a result.
Prevention measures
• Be aware of symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Seek medical attention to your nearest health facility if you experience these symptoms.
• Practice good hygiene by washing your hands regularly and sneeze into your elbow or sleeve; avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Stay at home if you are feeling unwell
• Avoid being in close contact to people who are sick
• Limit your movement in crowded places.
• Take extra care of people with disabilities, children and elderly.
The Ministry of Health urges the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the flu-like-illness. It is crucial to maintain good hygiene, seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms, and stay informed through official health advisories.
