The Ministry of Health wishes to update the public on the current influenza or flu situation on Efate Island. According to the latest surveillance report of the Ministry of Health covering the period from 30 December 2024 to 5 January 2025, a total of 360 confirmed cases of flu have been recorded at Vila Central Hospital. The majority of cases have been detected in the communities of Ohlen, Mele, and Bladiniere, with no death. The high number of cases makes it an outbreak of flu on Efate Island.
Influenza Transmission and Symptoms
Influenza, or the flu, is spread primarily through respiratory droplets from an infected person's cough, sneeze, or talk. It can also be spread by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your nose, mouth, or eyes
Common symptoms of Influenza include runny nose, headaches, muscles aches, and sneezing.
Prevention measures
- Be aware of symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Seek medical attention to your nearest health facility if you experience these symptoms.
- Practice good hygiene by washing your hands regularly and covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and wearing a mask if you have to go to a public place.
- Limit your movement in crowded places.
- Take extra care of people with disabilities, children and elderly
The Ministry of Health urges the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the flu. It is crucial to maintain good hygiene, seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms, and stay informed through official health advisories.
