Decentralization of Vila Central Hospital Outpatient Department Services to other health facilities within Port Vila

The Vila Central Hospital will decentralize its Outpatient Department (OPD) services to other health facilities within the Port Vila area.

The Ministry of Health would like to inform the general public that the OPD at Vila Central Hospital will now only be used for emergencies and referrals.

This is part of the Ministry of Health decision to reinforce and activate referral pathways outlined within the National Health Referral Policy, National Health Facility Role Delineation Policy and roll out of its human resources placements that has increased in health facilities since 2017

These arrangements will establish a referral system that peripheral facilities will refer patients to seek services required at VCH.

To ensure that health services are provided closer to the doorstep of people, Outpatient Department services will move to the following health facilities capacitated with outpatient nurses and doctors:,

  • Imere Health Centre,
  • Erakor Dispensary,
  • Pango Kalwat Memorial Health Center,
  • NTM Heath Centre,
  • Erasa Municipal Dispensary,
  • Saint Camille Dispensary ( Anamburu),
  • Vanuatu Family Health Medical Centre,
  • Kam Pusum Hed at Wan Smol Bag, Tagabe, and
  • Marine Reach Family Care Centre at Teouma Valley.

In addition, the the listed health facilities will be used for COVID-19 testing and care for mild cases during alert levels two (2) and three (3).

The health services that will remain at VCH are Emergency, Special medical, surgical, children’s outpatient clinic, gynae clinic, antennal clinic, Ear Nose Throat clinic, eye clinic, operations theater, surgical medical maternity and Children’s Ward. Maternity ward and Dental Services will be decentralized at a later date.

Through the decentralisation workload and care of patients will be shifted from the tertiary hospital to the peripheral health centres.

People living close to the listed health clinics are encouraged to make use of these services. Should there be minor health issues, go to the nearest clinics and get treated by the professional nurses and doctors.
