Overview
Lenakel Hospital is situated on the western part of Tanna Island is the provincial referral hospital for TAFEA Province and it focus mainly on curative services, distribution of medical services throughout the province. It also provide distribution of drugs to TAFEA Outer Island dispensaries and Aid Posts and it also provide much needed specialist clinical through Medical Doctor’s Outreach programs to isolated communities on Tanna Island including TAFEA outer Islands. Based on the 2009 Population the Vanuatu National Statistic Office Projected Population, Lenakel Hospital provides medical service to a population of 34,918 population of TAFEA Province of which 30,770 is on Tanna Island

Means of Services Delivery
- Monthly managers meetings and working with Ministry of Health with aid donors
- Managers work in line with ward incharge and general services to create a business plan for 2018
- Appoint a staff on contract collecting revenue with the assistance from Finance officer assistance
- Increase outreach Activity around Tanna and TAFEA Outer Island
- Appointment for off books, contract and acting position in to the new structure
Key Archievements
- Continuous Medical Education (CME) of nurses with 11 topics of the following topics: PPH and how to manage Emergency Obstruction Complications, Patho gram, Infection Control, History taking (OPD), IM injection, Dispensing, Dressing, IV antibiotic, Malaria (RTD) TB for a total of 20 staff.
- Lenakel Hospital successfully implement 90% of outreach program according to its 2017 business plan.
- Reach 100% health facilities (dispensaries and health Centres) for Tupaia Health facilities See Doctor Medical Outreach report
- Hospital staff during their space time have replace wards window screen and painted the window frames of all wards.
- 80% of hospital section has access to Computer or laptop for storage of data information.
- Staffing – 3 graduate midwifes, 1 Eye Nurse Practitioner, all contract move to permanent status, 1 new HR officer, 1 new groundsman, 1 new filing clerk, 1 new graduated R/N, 1 Aid Nurse
- New TB Ward
- Infection control at Lenakel Hospital is boosted with the installation of a new incinerator,
- There is a new Generator donated by the China Aid after cyclone TC PAM
- Lenakel hospital Management has acquired new Uniforms for all clinical & Maintenance staff.
Infrastructural Development
- TB Ward. TB is a burden on affected families on Tanna Island, which has a high incidence of TB positive cases. DFAT-AAP has funded a new TB ward on Lenakel Hospital.
- A new shed was built in 2016 to house the new Incinerator donated by SPREP.
- Renovation of staff quarters. Six (6) hospital staff quarters are being renovated through Cyclone PAM recovery funds through DFAT-AAP and ViVa.
- Storage shed. A new store shelter was built at Lenakel Hospital for storage building material for renovation of hospital staff buildings, funded by DFAT-AAP
New equipment
- Allied health Services – The Laboratory has acquire a new Gene Xpert analyser capable for performing MTB/RIF resistance tests, HIV-1 Viral Load, CT/NG tests (chlamydia trachomatis/ Neisseria gonorrhoea). Radiology and Imaging Department has also receive a donated TOSHIBA Xariao XG Scan from Rockhampton Hospital in Queensland.

Staff Uniforms
- Lenakel Hospital has purchase staff uniforms for 100% of Nurses, Laboratory gown and scrub uniform for Allied Health staff and safety shoe, trousers and shirts for axillary staff.
Motor Vehicle
- The hospital has no vehicle. All vehicles used for the daily running of hospital services belongs to provincial health programs and rural dispensaries. This has force the management to contract the services of transport service to pick up and drop off staffs on evening and night shifts. Not only is that but the hospital also using the Ambulance to transport evening/night shift staffs.

- There is recommendation during presentation of the reports by the staff the following be included in 2019 business plan
- Proper set up for NCD clinic & equipment
- Appointment of new staff to manage COPD
- Improvement of Accident and Emergency services
